Interview This Ending


 

We came together as a band late during 2004 and started to write some songs to see if we could produce something really good, and we decided that we had alot of potential material! But before we started This Ending we all played together under the name of A Canorous Quintet. Quintet as a band came together around early 1993 but me an Fredrik had also been active as a Quartet with some other guys. Durin this time we had some line-up changes but in 1994 we ended up with the same members as in This Ending. So from then on we realised that we really could do some good hard hitting death metal together. We released one mcd and 2 albums before we called it quits! The main reason for quitting was that we didn´t draw musically in the same direction all the time and that we didn´t get the support we thought we deserved from our label. But now we´re back together and more focused than ever!

I would say in your face, hard hitting, aggressive but still groovy death metal!

The album consists out of 10 songs that we´ve really worked through so we feel that everything sounds the way we want it to sound. From the start of This Ending we aggreed to never release something that all of us couldn´t back 100%, so this is the result of 18 months work. We chose these songs from about 18 that we had written. The songs we chose for the demo Let the world burn and for the album we of course have put more time and thought into. I think we´ve created an interesting mix of songs that will keep your interest from the first second to the last at least that´s what we´ve been aiming for. The recording process was pretty ruff and we also changed some of the arrangements in the studio just to enhance the album. From time to time we hardly did anything but work in the studio and then some sleep! Right now i´m hoping that Inside the machine will please everyone into metal since i think it became an album out of the ordinary!

We started writing the songs in a studio actually. So we did alot of pre-production and from there we chose the songs that we wanted to continue to develop into something more. So i think for the first 6 months of This Endings existence we actually only played together a few times and the rest of the time we created music at home and in this studio. With enough songs in our back we started to rehearse for real and then we recorded the Let the world burn demo were we choose 3 tracks from about 13 that we had written so far. From then on everything went fast. First and foremost of course getting a label to back us up and then starting to complete material for the album. So we continued to write more songs and rearrange some of the old songs. Put it all into pre-production again and from there on you have what´s on the actual album.

We all are responsible for the songwriting, everyone has some creative input. But musically i think Linus and Leo has contributed most. When it comes to arranging the songs most of the responsibility has been laid on Linus. When it comes to the lyrics and the vocal tracks of course i always have the last word. For the drums Fredrik always have the last words but all in all we work as a unit. Everyone contributes and everyone gets their say so we can surely stand behind our music and always be proud of what we achieve!

We early on decided that our concept when it comes to the lyrics and the mood of the music would be dark. So most of the lyrics are about the misdeeds of man, the need for control and how you achieve it. But also about the strife and pain you endure during life and the sickness that dwells within. All in all you could say that misery and disease is what guides us lyrically!

This is a very hard question since i really like all of the tracks on the album. But one song i think came out very well is Pitch Black. I like the mood and the way this track sounds. It´s very hard and in your face with a chorus to die for if your into metal in my opinion.

I think it´s hard to say which artist influenced us but i guess in the back of our minds it´s the artists we always enjoyed listening to. Bands like Judas Priest, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Testament. But we tried to achieve something that stands on it´s own feet and that has it´s own sound so i can´t say that we really thought that much about influences when we wrote the music.

I´d have to say Judas Priest/Defenders of the faith, Slayer/Reign in blood(obviously), Death/Scream bloody gore, Testament/The legacy and Mötley Crüe/Shout at the devil.

I think the international metal scene is growing bigger and bigger right now. So all in all it´s very good, since the more metal gets recognized the better for the world i´d say. I think that each year there comes several albums that are really great and being part of this international metal scene and contributing to the quality of it i think it´s just great. I think the problem with the scene might be that there are too many albums released which makes the quality of the music dip, so you have to pick out the best things but they are usually very good then. The songwriting throughout the scenen has also evolved alot so i think it´s not a static genre that will stand still ever!

Hmm well not really, there's been a huge gap in the bands history and we haven't got the chance to hit the road since we re-united. Everyone knows that all the juicy shit happens on tour. Ask me the same question a year from now.

Now the main thing is to promote the album and that will surely include being on tour and playing festivals. When we will go on tour is still not decided but we have given our interest to some packages so we will se what happens. But be sure that This Ending soon will visit a venue near you during 2007 and make sure to be there! Apart from touring our next project will be to write more new songs and to be able to record another album when we have material that is strong enough to represent This Ending.
