Interview The Wake

Well, The Wake is a band from southern Finland from a small town called Karjaa. Founded in 1998 and made two demos: 2000 and 2002 before Spikefarm noticed us and signed us. So far made two albums for Spikefarm; Ode To My Misery 2003 and the newest "death-a-holic" just came out.

What are your biggest musical influences ?

We are pretty much allrounders when talking about musical influences or interests. Everything from Judas Priest to Deicide. If you compare our music to something, it would propably be close to the old Swedish melodic death metal / trash..

Can you speak to us about your new album called " Death-A-Holic " ?

Death-A-Holic is a hard, fast forward and melodic death metal album. If compared to the first album, this one is even heavier and much more  solid. We recorded it in Studio Mega, Sweden and it really sounds like how we wanted it to sound.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

We made the songs for "Death-A-Holic" in a year. A long process because we really wanted this album to be good and versatile. We threw away many songs that didn't fit. We also spent more time in recording and mixing this album than the earlier.

What are the lyrics talking about and where do you find inspiration ?

The lyrics in this record are pretty much my personal feelings written in a paper. Or course a lot of it is only symbolic but there are some thoughts that are straight from my own mind and life. Good inspirations  come in hangovers and losses in life.

What's your favourite " Death-A-Holic " track , and why ?

It's hard to say what's my ultimate favourite but if I'd have to choose one I would say "One More Day" or "The Elbow Of Zeus".
"One More Day" is very emotional and melodic but at the same time very aggressive and hard. "The Elbow Of Zeus" is really catchy and great song with great melodic parts.
 

Are you involved in any other projects and if so how do they compare to The Wake ?

I'm only involved in The Wake. The only one of us who has other projects is Jani who plays in Helsinki based death/trash band called The Scourger.

What are your favourite all times bands and albums ?

I would think of three bands and albums that are really my favourites.

  "Slaughter Of The Soul" by At The Gates,

  "Once Upon The Cross" by Deicide and

  "Tales From The Thousand Lakes" by Amorphis.

What's your opinion about the international metal scene ?

Metal is in my opinion somehow commercialising and more bands are making breakthroughs to bigger audiences. That's of course a good thing, but it spreads the opinions into two because there are a lot of metalheads that are really into the trueness of metal and  when it commercialises it becomes crap or pop. Also a lot of new bands coming all the time and it gets harder to make yourself seen in the mass. You have to be really unique these days..

Do you have any funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

A lot of funny things naturally happened during these years, but I cannot remember any of them so good that I could share with you..

Are there any plans for an upcoming tour ?

It would be nice to tour again in Europe but there are no plans at the moment for that. Our plan is to make more gigs in Finland this and next year and
If we get a chance to tour in Europe or somewhere else, we will surely do that.

What are your projects for the future ?

To stay alive and play in The Wake. We are soon starting to make new songs, play gigs and rehearse again, so that's the main project.
