Can you remain to us the story of The Joystix ? Yeah , me and Jimm was playing in a punk/rockabilly band called Sonicdollz. Sonicdollz started originally as a punk/rnr stlyled band but after a year we decided to shift our musical direction more to the rockabilly style. We changed the bass to a doublebass and played a lot of rockabilly-zed covers from the Sex Pistols,AC/DC and so on. Beside we played all the must have standards from the style. In 2005 thankfully to the lot of gigs and travel we had in our country without any breakthrough success we decided to stop the band .We were exhausted we needed some rest and personally I was not sure what to do. Does this whole shit makes any sense ?? Shouldn’t i just cut this whole crap and stop doing music ?? I had no idea. After one month of self searching J I thought “Fuck I must do something I can’t stop just like that after 14 years of playing” . My plan was to play music which feels good which is come out from us easily without any sweat and without any restrictions or must haves. I called Jimm asked what’s his point, of course he said yes. Franky our bassplayer from the’dollz quit the whole music stuff so he got out of picture but we needed a bassplayer.I‘ve known Brownstone from quite a long time we had a project together in the past. I’ve known that he loves the same music like us and has the style, and the musical knowledge we need so i called him and he said yes immediately. I’ve started to work on songs, picking covers, and we arranged our first rehearsal in 2005 August.We done 2 new songs plus a few covers in the first time we got together . It sounded cool, we had fun so that was the point i knew for sure that this 3 person should go on together !!
What are your biggest musical influences ? My biggest influences are Iggy Pop , Johnny Thunders, Elvis, and bands like The New York Dolls, Cheap Trick, T-rex, Motley Crue. As a band we have our favourites too : Danko Jones, Backyard Babies, The scandinavian scene (Hellacopters, Gluecifer etc.),The Ramones, D-generation, new bands like Crystal Pistol , Robin Black etc.
How would you describe your music in your own words ? I would describe it as heavy, riff-oriented punk r’n’r with a lil’ glam touch on it thankfully to our rockabilly experience it contains a bit danceable vibe, but catchy choruses! We wanna make the girls dance but we wanna be as heavy that they boyfriends cannot tell them that we’re gay . J
Can you tell us more about your debut album called « Playin’ With Fire » ? Basically its a collection of songs written in the timeframe from 2005.August ‘til 2006 February. It contains 12 to the point- heavy-riff oriented songs written lyrically and musically by me.It was fun to write it fun to record it and it’s sure a helluva fun to play ‘em live !
Can you speak to us about the recording sessions ? The whole process started around 2006 March. I had a clear vision what i want to hear, how i want our music to sound like. In the last few years i started to dig into the recording-mixing of instruments and music, so i thought let’s make a try and do this stuff in some kinda DIY style. I built a small so-called studio at my place and we worked there until the mastering phase. We had as much time as we wanted, no pressure, lot of ideas just came during the recordings. The rough version demos of the songs was ready much before the final recordings first we listened’em over and over and changed what we felt that should’ve be changed. So the recording and mixing was done by me, for the mastering we chose Eagle mastering. It’s a mastering company located in Finland and in my opinion they did a pretty good job with the stuff. They’ve brought out the maximum from the recorded stuff !
How did you proceed for the composition ? The way how a song gets together is always different. Usually a riff, or lyrics come first . If i start to work on a song i have a rough idea , some lyrics, riffs and i start to forming it and playin around with it. Mostly the lyrics changing in a way that the melody requires it. I think the chorus is the most important part of the song so i take care all the time that the chorus has to be memorable you should sing it after a few listening. And that’s it. You know the big ones says ‘The best songs come in 5 minutes ‘
What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ? The lyrics about my
personal experiences in the cruel world of relationships J
What’s your favourite track on « Playin’ With Fire » and why ? Hmmmm . My personal
favourite is Kinky. It has a cool heavy opening riff , Drop D tuned
stuff.
What are your favourite bands and all times albums ? Ohh.All times
albums !.I have a lot ! Beatles-Revolver ; Doors :Strange days ; AC/DC High voltage ; T-rex-Slider ; Thin Lizzy, New york dolls-I ; Stooges –Funhouse ; Dead boys-Young loud and snotty ; Johnny Thunders LAMF; The Ramones-Rockets to russia ; Cheap trick-Cheap trick ; Danzig-I ; Stray cats- I ; Motley Crue -94 ; D-generation-No lunch ; Monster Magnet Powertrip ; BYB-Total13, ;Hellacopters-Payin the dues ;The wildhearts-Earth vs. The wildhearts , Gluecifer-Automatic Thrill. Ok i have a lot more but i think it’s better if i finish it now J Brownstone would sure include –Guns and roses : Appetite for Destrucition and i think Jimm would include some Pantera, or Machine head stuff as well.
How is the metal scene in Hungary at this time ? The metal scene here
is for me pretty boring.But it ‘s only my opinion. Of course there are a
lot of bands. Sometimes i go and check a few new bands but they all the
same to me. Big noise mass, without melodies, singers screaming like the
have some serious mental problems, i think i’m too old for this. Where
has the fun the attitude and the melodies gone ????
Do any of you currently work on projects other than The Joystix ? Yeah we have a few
other things going on as well ! As you maybe know we had a project
together with Stuffy and Pam from High Schoool Motherfuckers. We
released an EP in japan around 2000 if i remember well. It was titled
666 and now we plan to do something new again. Some real raw noisy
garage punk stuff like our first EP..I hope we will have the time to do
this cause it would be fun !!
Are there any plans for an upcoming tour ? Of course. We just finished a one week short tour in Germany and Holland in the beginning of September. Our plan is to move outside of Hungary. We already fixed a few dates ‘til the end of this year in Germany and Holland as well., but we plan to do much more next year through Europe. I hope we will have the possibilities to play everywhere, we wanna go to Italy or France for example. I love France, our rec. company Shotgun generation and Active ent. is from Paris so i hope they will be able to help us to reach this goal.
Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?
Hmmm ..i have to
think about it.I think it’s funny or strange that if we move outside of
Hungary something always happens with our transportation vehicle. Not
among the borders. We played in Romania, and our wheel broke out on our
way back home in the middle of the night in a road which had an
inclination of 45 degrees and went through a huge fucking forest.
During our last trip we ran out of petrol on the
motorway so we just stopped and walked to get some petrol J
.I can’t wait to go again
somewhere in Europe maybe we’ll blow up or i don’t know what’s next ??
What are your projects for the future ? For the near future
we’re just preaparing to our record release party in Hungary. There are
gonna be two of them. The frst is going to be on the 30 rd of September
in Budapest(Capital city of Hungary) and the second is on the 7th of
October in our hometown Székesfehérvár. In both cases there are going to
be guests and friends who will share the stage with us. So we can’t wait
to rock on !
