Interview Soul Takers

Can you tell us more about your new album called « Flies In A Jar » ?

SureJ ! We finally have this new cd out, from 22nd of June and we’re very happy and proud of it. I thinks it is a more mature work compared to our first almbul "tides" because we’ve grown both as people and musicians.

Can you speak to us about the recording sessions ?

We recorded "Flies in a Jar" about 1 year ago at New Sin Studio with the help and support of Luigi Stefanini. It was really cool because the recording session were easier and more relaxed then the previous one, probably because we now know each other so it is more simple to work together. Luigi helped us a lot in finding a good general sound and in proposing some ideas for particular arrangements.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

Concerning the composition of our songs we basically start from the vocal melody. Once we have a good one we try to build an arrangement that suits the best this melody. In this phase the whole band in involved in proposing different ways to arrange it. We usually try several possibilities and then choose the one we prefer. So it normally takes a lot before a song reaches its "final version".

What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?

The lyrics written for this album take inspiration from the album title and are about the idea that we are all flies trapped in a jar. We tried to express this feeling, idea in different ways: in a song like "Heaven’s Pillars" the religious side is more evident, the intimist one in "Belied", the political one in "The Silent Empire". The inspiration came from our everyday life and writing lyrics is a sort of therapy to bad moments and feelings.

Who created the artwork ?

The artwork for this album is by Felipe Machado. We got in touch with him before beginning to record our CD and then we explained him our idea about the cover artwork. I think he succeeded in taking our idea and put it into practice. He’s a very talented guy and we’re really happy of his work.

What’s your favourite track on « Flies In A Jar » and why ?

This is always a difficult question to answer because everyone of us has its favourite songs and, in general, we are linked to every song of this album. Personally I would say that "Heaven’s Pillar" and Staring Eyes" are my favourite ones because of their mood and I think they best represent our sound today.

How would you describe your music in your own words ?

We have all different influences inside the band and our sound is a mix of this different influences First of all it’s impossible not to notice the huge influence classical music has on our music both on the harmonic point of view and because we use piano on every song. I think we can show gothic, progressive, heavy, and classical music influences and our music is our personal melting of all these aspects

What are your favourite bands and all times albums ?

I personally change my mind a lot of times about this every now and then, so It’s quite difficult for me to answer. At this moment I’m listening a lot to Marillion, Pain of Salvation, Pink Floyd and F. De André (an Italian songwriter) but it really depends on the moment. My favourite album of all times is "The Wall (Pink Floyd)": its songs and lyrics are simply awesome

What's your opinion about the international metal scene ?

Actually I’m not following the international metal scene very much, probably because after many years listening to metal I’m now looking for something new and different for me. In general I think we have more and more outstanding musicians compared to some years ago, but we lack of something new. I see really focused and technique and less about feelings, but I can be wrong because I’m not following it so much.

Can you remember your first gig ? How did it go ?

Probably I’d prefer not to remember it J . I remember that we played live several times before recording our promo. The first time was in a very (and I mean VERY) small club, there was a contest so we shared the stage with a punk and a pop band, the general sound was quite horrible and there was such a mess onstage that it was impossible to understand anything J . Not our best show so far, that’s sure.

Are there any plans for some gigs or an upcoming tour ?

Not yet, we are waiting to see the audience answer and the we’ll try to plan some gigs around Italy, even if the general situation here is not so fair. The possibility for a European tour are linked to sale rates or the possibility to support another band.

Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

the fact that Jari’s violin is usually called "lo strumento inutile" (the useless instrument)J ? I cannot remember exactly why but now it’s a common refrain you can hear in our rehearsal room, because he constantly plays even when we’re talking or having a pause. ("Jari!!!!! Stop playing that bloody useless instrument!!!!!!!!"ahahahahahah)

What are your projects for the future ?

We now are focusing on our upcoming acoustic gig on the 29th of July. After our holidays we’ll try to promote this album with some gigs ( the number of which depends on the sales rate). We are already working on new material but I think it’s too early to say something about it ‘cause we only have some rough songs.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show called Metal Choc ?

We’d like to invite all your listeners to visit our website www.soultakers.net so that they can listen to some songs and have an idea of our sound. Thanks a lot.
