Interview myGrain

Can you tell us more about your new album called « Signs Of Existence » ?

Resistor: Well, it's basicly melodic metal with a punch-in-the-face spice on it. There are ten great and catchy songs on the album.

Eve: I think we did better with Signs than we did on our first album Orbit Dance. It seems that the critics have agreed with this one and it’s just great!

How long have you been recording the album?

Resistor: I think it took about 6 weeks all together recording and mixing the whole album. We recorded the album at Sound Supreme studios, in Hämeenlinna Finland. The producer was Janne Saksa and we think he did a great job. We also recorded our first album "Orbit Dance" there. Last touch to the sounds gave Minerva Pappi at Finnvox studios. She mastered the album.

Eve: Yeah, we had an extra week this time and we really needed it. I guess it was just the right amount of time to do the work, we didn’t have too much of a hurry.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

Eve: Well, the song writing process was a bit different this time. We didn’t have any main songwriters or anything, all of us took part in the composing process. One song started from a guitar riff, another from a keyboard riff and so on. I’m sure you can hear that from the album. The songs are way more diverse than on the debut album. This is a way that suits us perfectly!

Can you tell something about the lyrics?

Resistor: Well Tommy writes 99% of the lyrics, so he should be answering this one :D

Eve. Yep... well I can tell you that there is a some kind of a space theme in the album, but there are every day life stories behind them.

What are your favourite songs out of this new album ? And what makes them so special for you ?

Resistor: My fave tunes on this album are "Asphyxiated and inflammable" & "Final Frontier". They just sound the best to my ear :D

Eve: It’s really hard to pick the favourite ones... I would still agree with Resi on Final Frontier if I had to pick one. It’s way different from anything we’ve done before: it’s slower, longer and more melancholic than the other songs. Then I like Killing Time a lot. It’s groovy and it has a catchy chorus. And it’s really fun to play live!

Can you speak to us about your musical evolution ? For you, what are the biggest differences between this new album and the previous?

Resistor: The biggest difference between these two albums are that we wrote the whole "Signs" album together in our shitty rehearsal room. There were no main song writer or anything. Everyone put their own effort to the songs and I think this working style was good for this album. I think also that this album is more darker, melancholy and the songs are better of course. We stretched the lines little bit, so there is more heavy and more softer elements on the songs.

Which songs from the album will you playing live ? Why did you choose that ones?

Resistor: That's a hard one. I think when we start the upcoming finnish tour we choose 6 new songs and 4 old ones. There is few songs that we'll definitely will play live, but we gotta figure out which ones we won't play that often?

Eve: It’s great that now we don’t have to play the same songs over and over again and we can change the set on every gig if we want to. It’s also difficult to pick the songs cause everyone has their own live favourites and there are also songs that are bitchy to play live to some of us. But well, we just have to try to be democratic, as always... :p

Did you film a promotional video ?

Resistor: Well we hoped that our recod label would have given us a chance to film our first music video, but that hasn't happen yet. Hopefully soon?

Eve: Yeah, we haven’t decided that yet ourselves either. I don’t know if it’s wise to shoot it anymore cause the album’s been out a while already...

Are there certain songs on the album you want to mention or tell something about?

Resistor: I think you just gotta listen to the whole package a few times and then make your own opinion about it! Give the album some time and it will definitely "open up" for you.

What are your touring plans for 2008 ?

Resistor: Our finnish tour started 8.3.2008 from Pietarsaari, Finland and there are over ten gigs booked already and more coming up. Hopefully we get to play some summer festivals also and let’s see what will happen with the gigs abroad?

Eve: Yep, there are still chances that we will go to Europe this year... But we won’t set the hopes too high yet. ;-)

Can you tell us an anecdote which particularly marked the band ?

Eve: Well, we don’t want to label ourselves too much. Some say that we’re melodic death metal and some get very angry about even saying that aloud... at least that’s what we’ve noticed when reading some internet forums, hahaha! As Resi said before, we might be melodic metal. Might. J

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show Metal Choc ?

Resistor: Horns up all the metal heads listening to Metal Choc radio show!

Eve: Go to your local record store and ask them to order thousand copies of Signs, haha!
