Interview Koroded

Can you tell us more about your new album called « To Have And To Unhold » ?

This new album really means a lot to us. It was a hard time for everyone in the band when we wrote this. We got a new guitarplayer and out bassplayer was kicked out, because we had a big argument with him and my relationship fell apart. So there was a lot of anger and frustration in the air. You can really hear it on the record. It sounds much more emotional, organic and raw then the ones before. We are very happy with the result and the reactions so far.

Can you speak to us about the recording sessions ?

We recorded our album in Arhus in Denmark. We had a great time there. The studio was a part of an old farm house outside the city. Unfortunately it was very, very cold there all the time, because the heater was down.

« To Have And To Unhold » was produced by Jacob Bredahl : can you tell us more about it ?

We knew Jacob before, because I had been the booker for his band Hatesphere. When we heard the productions that he made for End Of Days or Machinemade God we knew that we must work with him. We wanted a sound wich is more direct, organic, rough and brutal then before and this is what Jacob did. We learned a lot from him during the recordings. On the one had he was very strict and kicked our asses to get the best result possible. On the other hand he always reminded us to PLAY music and not to think too much while playing. He reduced the songs to their red lines. Not too many details, but more balls.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

In many different ways. Sometimes we sit at home and write songs on acoustic guitars. Sometimes songs just come up when we are in the rehearsal room. We recorded all songs on my laptop this time. So each off us was able to just go to the rehearsal room and try out some new guitar tracks. I could also work a lot on the arrangements for my vocals at home.

What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?

My inspiration is everything around me. No matter if it is a personal, political or philosophical topic. If something touches me I write about it. Of course books and movies also inspire me a lot and help me to find some more strong pictures or metaphors. For example the song "unhold". It is about my relationship and how it fell into pieces. The feelings have already been there, but for the metaphors I was inspired by the movie "Frankenstein" with Boris Karloff from the 1930s. It sounds strange, but it is one of the best lyrics I ever wrote. "Embers" is also about my relationship. "With courage of despair" and "Scaretrade" are very political. In Scaretrade I describe how fears are created my media and politicians to control the people. Terror, bird flu, Russian mafia…. And so on.

What's your favourite track on « To Have And To Unhold » and why ?

It would be easier to say which song I don’t like that much haha. I think my favourite one at the moment is "Embers", because the lyrics have such an important meaning to me.

Can you tell us more about the video for the track « Zero Minus Zero » ?

It is a performance video. We shot it in a disco in Cologne. First we played the song without audience and later with audience. So we can cut this together and get a lot of dynamic into the video. We invited everyone to come on our website. We where so surprised how many people showed up in the end. The venue was packed with people and we had a great time there.

What are your biggest musical influences ?

The music of Koroded is influenced a lot by the sound of the 1990s like Deftones, Fear Factory, Machine Head, Pantera or Sepultura. These are for sure the biggest influences on the band. We all listen to almost every kind of music from jazz to grind-core.

What are your favourite bands and all times albums ?

My most favourite bands are Deftones, Vision Of Dsiorder, Suicidal Tendencies, Pantera, At The Gates, Sepultura, Down, Crowbar, Martyr AD, Meshuggah, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice In Chains and many others. It is always difficult to say what my favourite bands are, because it depends a lot of the mood I am in. The most important albums? Pantera’s "the great southern trendkill", Deftones "around the fur", Suicidal Tendencies "the art of rebellion" and "lights, camera, revolution", Alice in Chains "dirt", Red Hot Chili Peppers "blood sugar sex magic" and Metalica’s "master of puppets".

How would you describe your music in your own words ?

From bittersweet to ultrabrutal!!

You played with bands like Entombed, Ektomorf, Pro-Pain … What are you best memories ?

I often remember the tour with Crowbar in june 1999. It was one of the best tours we ever had, just because Crowbar are such nice guys. Besides that we had countless shows with countless bands and friends. The shows with Hatesphere where always cool. The Downset shows also. Shows with our friends from Undertow and Nme.Mine. It often depends on the audience and on how many friends come to a show. I like when the concert is like a big family meetings. These are for sure the best shows we have!!

Are there any plans for an upcoming tour ?

We will be on tour with Betzefer through whole Europe from april 4th to may 4th. I think this is gonna be awesome!!

Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

There are so many stories that I really don’t know where to begin. A lot of stuff is not easy to describe in an interview… hmm. I remember one thing from the Crowbar tour. The bassplayer of Crowbar was so drunk that he tried to step out of the nightliner while it was driving on the freeway. He was lucky that the busdriver stopped immediately. I will never forget that. A lot of stories have something to do with drinking alcohol and getting naked haha.

What are your projects for the future ?

We will celebrate our 10th anniversary in april next year and for this reason we will re-record 10 old songs. Besides that we will write a new album and play a lot of shows.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show called Metal Choc ?

Thank you very much for the interview. We appreciate it a lot!! Hope to see you on tour!!
