Interview Hydrogyn





Can you tell the readers a bit about the band's history　?

Julie: Well, We were formed in the winter of 2004. January to be exact. The band was already together when they came to me and asked me to fill in for a gig they had booked. They had been having problems finding a vocalist and I said I would love to try to do it and there ya have it. It went so well and I had so much fun that we decided to continue on with it. Along the way we have been getting the best lineup together. We have changed drummers from the original lineup as well as bass players. Our original drummer was Jerry Lawson who was replaced by Josh Kitchen. Jerry left because he could not handle it basically. Our original Bass player was Jason Fields who had an addicition problem so he was gone and in comes Dave Moody. Love Dave just was not the right fit for the band. SO he was replaced by Chris Sammons who is absolutely the right person. For guitarist it is Jeff Westlake who founded the band. We have had our long time partner Jeff Boggs who can not tour so we replaced him with DIO fame Craig Goldy; who did not work out either. So right now the lineup is Myself, Josh, Chris and Jeff W. That is the linup you will get on this tour.


What are your biggest influences ?

Julie: For me there really is not one except my mom. I grew up listening to her sing and my aunt and just picked it up naturally. For the guys they are influenced by any one from Sabbath to Trivium and on. Wide range and then you throw me in and you get HYDROGYN ahahahahaha.


How would you describe your music in your own words ?

Julie: Well it is changing. The music for the new CD is very heavy. Much heavier than Bombshell. SO I would say we are a Metal band with Melodic vocals.


Can you tell us more about your live album called "Strip’em Blind Live !" ?

Julie: Yes. Recorded live on Sept 1st 2006 in Charleston West Virginia (US). We did a show with Quiet Riot and Warrant there in our home area in front of 15000 people, Great night, great crowd and just a great show that we decided to give to the fans. There is also a couple first with a new track and Big star live on there and some modified versions of other songs as well. We had a lot of people asking for something live so we decided while we finish the Sex and Sin World Tour to release the live album as a thank you to all the fans while we write the new CD.


Did you start to work on a new studio album ?

Julie: Yes. We have recorded 3 songs and havew about 15 more written or are finishing up. Should be a really great Cd.


What's your opinion about the international metal scene ? Specially in the category female fronted ?　

Julie: Well. I think the scene is gaining momentum. We were part of the first all female fronted festival ever in Seattle Washington on Sept 1st of this year as well. Great time. I think it is easy. If you want to be in this business you have to stand your ground as a female and stay in it. The biggest thing is that you have to be the FRONT PERSON and not someone who shares the spotlight. To be taken seriously you have to do all the things that the Men have done. DIo, Halford, Coverdale etc did not get to the status they are at by simply showing up. The females have to understand that this is work and work that is hard and demanding so you need to be on it. There is room for women in this genre and I know it as does DORO. Look at her career. She did not give up she pounded the scene and she is being rewarded for it. You have to work and that is what I am doing along with V from Benedictum and some others. It comes down to who is left standing and that will be the answer. You have to want it and take it serious if not you willl mean nothing regardless of being a woman or a man.


What are your favourite all times bands and albums ?

Julie: I do not have any. I know for instance that Jeff W fave is DIO and his fave CD is Mob Rules as we hear it all the time ahahahahahaha. Josh likes Eric Singer on Drums and a lot of others but he has many things he listens too. Chris I am not sure but he is the technical guy in the band and listens to that style of Metal.


How do you prepare yourselves either mentally or physically before you enter on stage ?

Julie: Just relax. Everyone is different. I warm up my voice for abut 30 minutes before going on. Jeff W goes into a room by himself for the quiet and Josh stretches and Chris is the high strung one who moves non stop so who knows what he does. Ahahahahaha. We all meet up about 10 minutes before stage time and talk about the set and go kick some but.


Do you have any funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

Julie: There are always stories from every situation imaginable. One time in the states we were on tour and I used flash cotton in a few shows. That is the stuff that lights on fire and burns out very quick. We were back stage and I talked our sound Man Davo into letting me put it in his belly button and lighting it. Ahahahahahahahaha. I can barely tell this it cracks me up beyond belief. So I lit it and it caught his entire stomach hair on fire and he was running around the room like a little sissy girl smacking his stomach putting it out. God that was priceless ahahahahahahaha.


Are there any plans for some gigs ?　

Julie: Yes. We will be in france again In November with Gigs with Nightmare and then also into Belgium and then to Italy for a run of shows. Then we are back to the states for the studio and finishing the new CD in December and January.


What are your projects for the future ?

Julie: We continue to work on a DVD, the new CD in the spring and tour all of 2008/ We are looking forward to it.
