Interview Emil Bulls

METAL CHOC

Can you tell us more about your new album called Phoenix ?

I think with this album we made the next step to become the most agressive Indie/Pop band on this planet.

Basically „PHOENIX" is a logical advancement of our last album „THE BLACK PATH", which offered the band loads of new possibilities in songwriting. In my opinion we created an album with no musical boundaries. The song itself was our main focus no matter if it`s a headbreaking clubsmasher or a piano ballad.

If it`s good it will find a place on the album.

On the one hand this album is agressive as fuck and on the other hand as sweet as candy. We also managed to give the whole album the freshness and furiousness of our previous works like „Angel Delivery Service" or „Monogamy".

I m very proud of being part of a band that has no fear to try new things. We`re always off to new horizons.

Can you speak to us about the recording sessions ?

Fortunately our skills as musicians grew to a respectable level over the last years and so we were able to record this monster within two weeks.

We worked together with our producer Benny Richter at the wonderful „Principal Studios" in M nster. I don`t think a day passed, on which we didn`t work less than 14 or 15 hours. The motor was running perfectly. Thank god, we didn`t run out of fuel.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

We escaped to the mountains and locked ourselves up for two weeks in a cottage.

There we were able to write music 24/7 without distraction. 90% of „Phoenix" was written in this period.

What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?

The lyrics of the album often pick up fire as a central theme. Not only do I sing about fire as an element and a destructive force. I also describe fire as a fundamental piece of vitality. Another issue is the everlasting fight against the inner demons that everyone of us has to deal with.

I get my inspirations from movies, dreams and personal experiences.

I try to write lyrics that people can identify with even if it`s autobiographic stuff.

Who created the artwork ?

Thorsten B rging aka T-man from „Koma Grafik" in Munich.

He created a great design for our last album „The Black Path" and so he was our first choice to do the adventurous artwork of „Phoenix".

Did you film a promotional video ?

Yes we shot a clip for the song „When God Was Sleeping" with our friend and director Nepomuk von Fischer . Check it out on youtube or myspace.com/emilbulls.

You`ll see that we had a lot of fun.

What’s your favourite track on Phoenix and why ?

At the moment I have a different favourite each day cause I m really happy about how the album turned out.

Right now I ve got the melody of „Time" ringing in ears.

Which songs from the album will you play live ?

We always try to be able to play every single song we`ve written live, so we can change our setlist from day to day. We also wanna find out which songs are peoples favourites. If the audience is freakin out over a song it`s definetely long time setlist material.

What are your touring plans ?

Our tour starts on the 1st of october and we`ll be on the road till the end of the year.

Most of the dates are happening in Germany ,Italy Austria and Switzerland but we try to manage to tour the rest of Europe as soon as possible.

What are your favourite bands and all times albums ?

A-ha was the first band I fell in love with and this love is still burning. Morten Harkets way to form melodies influenced me in a strong way. The first metal band that really knocked me out was „Pantera". They`re still my favourite metal band and it`s a shame that they don`t exist anymore. RIP Dimebag Darrell !

Some of my all time favourite albums are:

A-ha: scoundrel days

Pantera: vulgar display of power

Machine Head: burn my eyes

Social Distortion: white trash, white light, white heat

Helmet: betty

Suicidal tendencies: the art of rebellion

Kyuss: blues for the red sun

Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

There is one story that dwarfs all other funny stories the band or a band member was involved. All I can say is that in this particular story a girl, a table and the police had the leading part...but what happens on tour, stays on tour. Now you can build your own story around that. It`s not as simple as you may think.

Believe me, in the life of a band every day another strange thing is happening.

What are your projects for the future ?

We are going to record our first live dvd for the band`s 15th birthday. The shooting will take place on the 14th of november at our homecoming show in Munich at the „Backstage".

We re really exited about that and I`m already quite nervous.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show called Metal Choc ?

Hey everyone this is Christoph from „Emil Bulls" hope to see you all on the road.

In the meantime stay tuned to Metal Choc. Prost und reingeballert.
