Devian came about as a project between me (Legion) and Emil since we wanted to do a new kind of metal together so we started trading ideas and recording material in our homestudios. We kept working until we had two tracks that we were really satisfied with, that we felt could be the first step of our new band. So we started bringing in members and keeping on writing and soon we had a slab of vicious metalsongs, before we knew it we got picked up by CMR and we ventured into the Art Decay studios for three months of really focused recording sessions making the material all it ever could be.

Can you tell us more about your debut album called « Ninewinged Serpent » ?

It contains 9 songs plus an instrumental intro. Its got a lot of power and heart and we are really proud of what we manage to turn it into. We recorded 72 minutes of original music and put 45 minutes on the album. It´s a slab of all around Metal, of course having me and Emil in there it´s gonna be Black, but we also managed to incorporate elements of Death, Thrash and Heavy into a really nice combination. It´s both beautiful and aggressive.

They were rough haha! For the first time in my carreer I had the possibility to spend three months in the studio and we used that time as effectively as we could. Building on and refining the songs to the greatest metalattack they could ever be. Some songs grew unexpectedly and hearing the final master on the way home from Tailormaid in Stockholm we were screaming in the car, it was such a release from all the tension that´s been built up during the course of the sessions. There was some wrestling and one guitar got thrown pretty bad into a wall haha but only because we all so bad wanted to push eachother as far as possible, when it was all finished we all calmed down again.

We add on to eachothers ideas until we feel that the songs work. It´s always a lot of brainstorming and no tender toes allowed. I remember presenting a whole new song for the others and they just looked like opening a carton of too old milk saying That was not one of your good moments writing that, and that´s Ok, then we just discarded it and moved on with fresh ideas until the songs sounded great being rehearsed.

The inspiration comes from all kinds of happenings. For Ninewinged Serpent all the lyrics were triggered by actual events and ideas about the thereabouts. It´s still me, I´m the same person as I was in Marduk but I don´t feel the need to do the same lyrics one more time, I feel I´ve said all that I had to say about that. These lyrics are maybe a bit more thoughtful, they have more levels to them and some words are really strong, it´s always been a great catalyst for me to let those things out of me.

He is the master! I love his technique and style and he was turned on by our ideas so he bought into doing the cover. The idea behind it is the Nine day fall, the cast out angels from heaven that moved on to form hell instead. The entire concept about the album is that doing what you truly believe in is doing what you must. And that it´s always worth it.

I have a few ones. I think the title track is awesome, in a live setting it works really well plus I love the lyrics, very blunt and in your face.
Scarred is a great representative for the album as a whole, Heresy is great too I think.

We have them all rehearsed so they are all gonna be in the set. We are releasing a limited edition with two other songs on it, called Burning Daylight and Jackal that contains not a percent of filler, the album just turned out too long for them to be in there. But those two tracks are also great for liveshows so we´ll definitely do them too on some occasions.

Iron Maiden - Piece of mind because it was the first album I could ever afford to buy. I had heard Number of the Beast before and thought that it was amazing, but coming home from the store with that one putting it on I still remember, that vinyl was unlistenable after a bunch of years because I always returned to it over and over.

Slayer - Reign in Blood for opening a whole new world to me. Hearing "Angel of Death" storm out of the speakers for the first time I just wanted to scream and break things haha, I had no idea that music could awake such a beast in me, on that day I became a dedicated fan of harder music.

Are there any plans for an upcoming tour ?

Yes a tour is being booked right now. Expect us to be all over Europe in the beginning of 2008!

Talking to Century Media on the phone we agreed on that I would show up at their office in Dortmund and talk a little more serious about the future. The day before that meeting something really horrible happened that gave me a total meltdown, I was all fucked up in plain english. I insisted on going there anyways, by train, but being in the state of mind I was I went to Düsseldorf instead, haha the world was spinning, I could not think straight. We had the meeting and they were so supercool and accomodating and we could agree on anything and everything that should be in a recordcontract. They took me to the trainstation with a huge box of CD´s. I got my ticket rebooked and my CMR guy said Ok, all taken care of, just get on the train and sit tight and you´ll be fine. As the train passed through Düsseldorf I stepped off again, I don´t even know why hahaha, I had to take small weird trains all the way home to Stuttgart but ended up in a weird little countryside town where the trainstation was closed, it was in February and freezing outside, so I walked around outside with this huge box outside for three hours til the first train came in the morning and I could finally go home...fucking hell I was a wreck, but what was great was that I figured if I´m this screwed up and gutfeeling still says Yes! when being in their office it has to be right. So we signed and it has been a really pleasant experience til this day.
