Interview Coldworker





Can you speak to us about your second album called « Rotting Paradise » ?

Well it's our second album. It will bring you 12 tracks of full blasting death metal! We excluded 2 songs from the album because we were afraid that it would feel too long otherwise. These 2 songs will end up on a vinyl 7# split sometimes later this year (hopefully).


How long have you been recording the album ?

We recorded it for about two weeks before christmas. We recorded the drums first (of course), and then the guitars and bass were recorded parallel at different locations. Joel even had to sing some songs with only drums and the "support guitar" that's recorded with the drums before the real guitars.


How did you proceed for the composition ?

There is three major differences between the songwriting for "Rotting" and "Void". On "Void" we had to rush to get everything together in time for the recording. The last song "They Crawl inside me uninvited" was written like a week before we began to record. That time we really had a "deadline" to work against. So that made "Void" to a very spontaneous album. So the time-aspect of the songwriting between our two albums is absolutly a difference. This time we had more time to go back and rewrite or rearrange stuff that we discovered wasn't good enough.

Another big difference this time is that we wrote more individually. Everyone brought their own songs instead of just throw in a riff or two that we could mold into a song like we did the last time. The final thing is of course that we replaced André with Daniel on guitar.


What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?

All our lyrics are more or less based on all the shit that is happening around us. The topics revolve around things like war, religious brainwashing and fanaticism, addictions of various kind, mental sickness and so forth. On the new album we have also included a couple of "horror-like" stories. You just have to watch the news to find inspiration.


You have worked with Dan Swanö for this new album.  Can you tell us more about it ?

Dan Swanö have been mixing both "Void" and "Rotting", but he did not produce either of them. He helped us solve some technical problems and soundchecked the drums before we began, but after that he steped aside and we recorded everything for ourselfs (exept for the guitars). Anders J and Anders B recorded the drums at Soundlab, the guitars were recorded at a friends apartment (all digital this time). We recorded the bass in Anders J:s livingroom, straight in to the computer... and finally we recorded the vocals in our rehearsalroom.

We handed over the stuff to Dan and he began to mix everything down. He emailed us his first mix, and based on that we gave him feedback on what we liked or didn't like. So he changed some stuff again until everyone was satisfied. On "Void" I believe that he did like 11 mixes or something like that before everyone was happy, this time he did like 3 or 4. So it was a lot easier this time.


Who created the artwork ?

Orion Landau, the same guy that did the artwork for us on "The contaminated void". We really love his work and gave him free hands this time. The only ideas we came with was that we wanted a cover that looked more like a painting than a "photoshopcover". We also asked him to check out Hieronymus Bosch and his paintings for inspiration.


What are your favourite songs out of this new album ? And what makes them so special for you ?

It's very hard to answer this question since you don't have the same perspective to the songs that anyone outside the band has. Therefor I can only say that it changes from day to day, but right now it's definitly "The last bitter twist". It's a really funny song to play, and I really love Joels lyric and the vocalpattern. In my ears it gives the song a "Cannibal Corpse" vibe.


Did you film a promotional video ?

Nop, not yet.


Do you remember your first gig ? How did it go ?

The first gig we did was with Radioskugga and Gadget, at their releaseparty for "The funeral march". We played in Gadgets hometown Gävle in Sweden. We played at a venue called Monster, and the stage was located downstairs at the club, inside a cage. As I recall it the playing went down good, but the show might have been a bit stiff.


What are your touring plans for 2008 ?

Right now we only have two gigs planned. The first is at a festival here in our hometown on the 2th of May. The other one is at Neurotic Deathfest in Tilburg NE the 30th of May. But we hope to do a tour or some more festivalgigs this summer. Only time can tell...


What do you see in the future for Coldworker ?

Hopefully we will continue to do albums and get out to do some proper touring.
