For those totally unfamiliar with Cave In : can you
remain to us the story of the band ?
We grew up drinking too much Methuen water, and it mutated our minds in
such a way as to hear music closer to the sounds of dying shrapnel from
the lungs of a mechanical T-Rex than anything pleasant. So we bonded
over this about 10 years ago, and have since been stirring up molten
racket in our melting pot of metal.
What are your biggest musical influences ? Which are the artists who
nfluenced you or whom you appreciate particularly ?
Converge was the first band I'd ever heard who weren't afraid to mix in
the sounds of stuff on K Records or noisier Ebullition-type stuff into
their breed of heavy music. To begin with, Cave In was essentially a
Converge rip-off in many ways.
How would you describe your music in your own words ?
A bucket of eardrums that once belonged to a cosmic-based heavy metal
posse falling down 30 flights of stairs... and living to tell about it.
Talking about your album called « Perfect Pitch Black ». Can you tell
us more about this album ?
It's a mish-mash of all things Cave In, really. And wrote the thing
entirely under the influence of both drugs and commercial failure. The
combination was just lethal, and these songs vibrate with the tones of
rehabilitation from this experience.
How did you proceed for the composition ?
We wrote what we wanted to hear - we made a record that we felt proud to
keep in our own record and CD collections.
What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?
Lyrically, many of the songs allude to the weirdness of being in limbo
with our label and certain other business people we were involved with
at that time. But we tried not to make it sound like we were whining -
and in fact, we did have a blast coming up with the music for this one.
What's your favourite track on « Perfect Pitch Black » and why ?
"Trepanning" is certainly the highlight of the record, there's no doubt
about that. I hope we can make a whole record of "Trepanning"s - that is,
a whole record where each song is that good. "Paranormal" is a sonic
achievement for Cave In, I believe.
What's your favourite bands and all times albums ?
The Crash-Test Dummies, Bread, Death, Still Life, Deadguy, the "Transformers
- The Movie" soundtrack...
What's your opinion about the international metal scene ?
I don't really know much about it. Opeth is pretty popular, right? And
well-respected? We listened to one of their albums a bunch in the van a
couple years ago. Is Joey Belladonna back in Anthrax again or what?
Do you think to release a DVD soon ?
We've talked about it, and everyone is certainly open to the idea. If we
can make some kind of artistic breakthrough - for ourselves, mind you! -
then I think we'd feel good about releasing something visually-based on
Cave In.
Can you remember your first gig ? How did it go
?
It was chaos! I remember the stage we were playing on was rocking back
and forth, and being in tune was too time-consuming to bother much with.
We were Sophomores in high school - I wore an Atlanta Braves T-shirt,
and I couldn't even name one player who's EVER played on the Braves
before...
Are there any plans for an upcoming tour ?
Yeah, a U.S. tour is happening between Thanksgiving & Christmas holiday,
and we're presently planning a European tour to happen in January/February
2006.
Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share
with us ?
One time I ate a bag a marijuana before a show somewhere in Belgium and
I had to be helped onto the stage like an old man. I was about 4 or 5
seconds behind the rest of the band, ripping solos in bizarre places,
and mumbling words. At the time, I thought I was doing well - I'm sure
plenty of people left that show feeling a bit ripped off.
What are your projects for the future ?
We have a limited edition cassingle being released by Hydra Head - it
has two brand new songs that we recorded last summer with Ben from
Converge playing drums.
And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show called
Metal Choc ?
Don't listen to Faith No More's "The Real Thing" too loudly, especially
not with your left ear pressed up hard against the stereo speaker -
it'll cause permanent hearing damage, as it did with my own. And thanks
