Interview Brainstorm





Can you tell us more about your new album called « Downburst » ?

The main difference is, that this time we wrote all the songs in our rehearsing room. For "ST" and "LM" most of the songs were written while we´ve been on tour. So, okay,…that was very cool to keep the special "live feeling and atmosphere" but for us, it was time to concentrate a bit more on the songs as I was a bit afraid that we´re pretty close before copying ourselves. So I think we discovered ourselves in a new way, stretched our borders …and that is maybe the main reason to me, why "Downburst" sounds so amazing and is maybe our best album so far!


How long have you been recording the album?

We started writing Songs at the end of 2006 and we promised ourselves to write the maybe best songs ever. So we wrote 13 Songs and recorded them all. We decided to record the new album far away from our hometown and stayed there for 1 ½ months. Together we arranged all songs and I also think they helped us a lot to open a new chapter! Together with Sascha Paeth and Miro, we reached a new level and made Brainstorm being ready for the next 20 years, ha ha ha,…


How did you proceed for the composition ?

You know, last time, we tried to keep the live atmosphere in our songs and sound. This time we combined both: the perfection of a studio and the energy of one of our live shows. We know, that many fans love us also because of our live power, but everyone wanted to see Brainstorm making a big…BIG step forward! "Downburst" is by far our most intense and most diverse album. In many way, we stretched our borders and searched new horizons. I think that especially the combination of the band, together with Sascha and Miro was really important. Together we worked realy, really hard on every single song,… and noone has ever left the studio before he was 150% satisfied with the song.


Can you tell something about the lyrics?

I´m not a preacher and we don´t want to tell anybody what´s right or wrong. I´m writing a lot about things I read or heard about, situations I personally went through and also me and my personal problems I had some years ago. There are definitely songs on the album where I´m talking about social problems for ex. But as always, Brainstorm is a band you can read the lyrics and listen to. But also,… you can have a beer and bang your head to!


What are your favourite songs out of this new album ? And what makes them so special for you ?

I was really sad after the first listen when we have used "computer strings" for some songs like "End in sorrow" or "Surrounding walls",… so we decided to invite a real small orchestra to record them real! And what can I tell you,… since then it´s a difference like day and night! I love those parts and especially these songs!

　

Can you speak to us about your musical evolution ? For you, what are the biggest differences between this new album and the previous?

You know, over the last years, we always recorded our albums together with the same guy in the same studios near our hometown. After we listened carefully to our latest efforts, we asked ourselves if we´re close to a point before copying ourselves. So we decided to change a lot of things. We wanted to show the people, that Brainstorm has more,…even much more to say than many fans expect. So we wrote our songs at home and went over to Wolfsburg just to be focused on the music for 24hours. We had nothing else to do than playing and recording….okay, sometimes drinking, he he


Who created the artwork ?

The same guy who did the cover for Liquid Monster,… Tom Thiel an amazing painter! It´s a fighter! Someone who´s taking care of nothing haha! You know, we went through so many ups and downs over the last 15 years,…so we decided to have someone on the cover who fights for his rights and for his dreams,…like we do!

I don´t think we do really care too much about so many opinions or meanings,… in the first place we care about ourselves and do what we like…. But it´s definitely not bad if someone else on the planet likes us too,haha

　

Which songs from the album will you playing live ? Why did you choose that ones?

Oh, so far, I have no idea,… we´ll see, but the fact, that we have re-released the first two albums as well,… just makes it a bit easy to surprise some fans,… but the main focus will be on the new effort, as we want to hear people scream "FIRE walk with me", ha ha


Did you film a promotional video ?

Yes, Hopefully it will be ready within the next weeks,… there are many fans asking for it,… gonna be a funny one, ha ha


Are there certain songs on the album you want to mention or tell something about?

Besides the two I already mentioned,.. I think that Fire walk with me, Stained with sin or how do you feel are really good ones. But to be very honest, they´re all cool!


What are your touring plans for 2008 ?

The first leg of our European headliner tour kicks off on march 3rd,… then we will jump over to the US, play some festivals in the summer in Europe,…then the second leg of the European tour starts and later in 2008 we´ll jump over to Japan and Brazil,,… so we´ll bring the Downburst everywhere, ha haha,…
