Sure thing, Biomechanical was put together as a project by me in 1999. I wrote Eight Moons then and my then boss Steve Brown (producer of The Cult, Manic Street Preachers Queen and others) managed Biomechanical. At that point I collaborated with guitarist Steve Forward for the first demo recordings. After the initial interest by Steve Brown things got a bit more serious and I decided to start looking for band members. Steve Forward introduced me to Jamie Hunt (Guitarist) who is heavily into Dream Theater and loved the music! Great guitarist and a good guy too. After that it was a very long search through the internet that got me together with Chris Webb (Guitars) Jon Collins (Bass) and Matt C in 2001. All of the guys are very talented and great guys too. It’s awesome working with them.
After the band’s line-up was finalised we decided to finish and release our first demo ’Distorted’. It wasn’t available to buy but was sent to Record Labels/ Zines/ Sites only. We were surprised with the great outcome on the reviews and carried on to record our debut album Eight Moons. It took quite a while to get signed and it wasn’t until 2003 that Biomechanical released the debut album Eight Moons through the legendary Revolver Records!! Thankfully the album got great reviews and this enabled the band to become more known in the record industry circles. It was then that Lee Barrett saw several reviews on the band and offered them a deal through ’Elitist/ Earache’. Biomechanical signed a four album deal last September and will be releasing the second album ’The Empires of the Worlds ’ June 2005

Sure, this album has been in the making for quite a while. In fact some tracks were written since our first album was out. The writing was finalised after we finished all our interviews and reviews for Eight Moons and recorded a four tracks EP for record labels only. It was titled Existenz and it featured the tracks ’The Empires of the Worlds’, ‘Disintegration’ ‘Assaulter’ and ‘ of course ’Existenz’. That was done September 2004. We then started looking for a deal while recording the album in my studio. By the time we got the deal the album was recorded and we then (Band and Label) decided to step up the production by mixing the album with Nevermore/ Machine Head producer Andy Sneap. The album cover was done by Nat Jones. Nat is an awesome illustrator who has worked on magazines such as ‘The Spawn’ and ‘The Haunted’. I wanted to work with someone who was involved with those mags for ages and it was great to have this opportunity. I gave him the idea for the cover and he got it right after only two tries! The inlay is done by Anthony and Matt @ Earache and I am extremely happy with it too!

I am the main songwriter of the band and the way I usually work is to visualise the album before I start writing. It gives me a good idea of colour, tempo and texture of the album and makes the song writing a bit easier to complete. I look for a good riff before anything else. Sometimes I have a chorus in my head and I write around it (it could give me tempo and feel of the song). I then I add orchestral writing within the song.

As I said (hands up;-) I am the main songwriter. I don’t think it’s unusual for this to happen. A lot of bands have one or two songwriters. The guitarists then add their solos and tha bassist shapes the band with his own sound and the drummer adds his feel of playing to the whole mix.

The Empires of the Worlds’ is a concept album and continues the story from Eight Moons. We wanted to talk about realistic issues through our albums in a not-in-your-face way and as sci-fi fans we found no better way than to use the story that runs through the album as a vehicle of interpretation of what this album is all about. In essence ’The Empires of the Worlds’ deals with the violent nature of humanity and our failure to see why we have become who we are. The album it’s a second part of a trilogy type of thing that will close with the next album.

I love all the tracks (how cliché hey?: ). I really do. The only one that stands out a bit more due to the larger amount of film scoring writing is Absolution. But me and the guys have put an equal amount of work in all the tracks and we have real trouble selecting which once we like the best

My influences music wise are John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Elliot Goldenthal. They are film music composers and have inspired me heavily. On the vocals I love the greats Geoff Tate, Bruise Dickinson and Rob Halford and I also like Phil Anselmo a lot.
It’s odd as the influences given from other sites and magazines are bands and album I only heard very recently. For instance the main track was given a Pantera (I heard their stuff don’t worry : ) label and at the time I was listening to Skunk Anansie’s first album and I was influenced by their rhythm and intensity of that band for that particular song.
Primarily we have our roots to the traditional metal with the intention to present our music with forward edge as much as possible without losing the feel of the tradition set by great band from the 80s and early 90s.

I was involved with Balance of Power for a while. It was great but it showed me that I can’t be in two bands at the same time. I am a bit sceptical about spreading my self too thin with other projects. I find it disorientating from the point of view that as a musician I have something to say and it comes through my music that at this point is materialised through the collective effort of Biomechanical. I can’t see myself writing and creating something else with the same intensity at this present moment with another band. The only other thing I am interested in is film scoring. But this can coincide with Biomechanical.

I think it’s quite healthy to be honest. It has considerably grown over the last few years and it’s great to see so many great bands breaking through. I doubt Metal as we knew it will ever start filling up stadiums again with new bands playing exactly the same style as before but music shifts all the time and that’s the great thing about it. It gives you freedom to move forward. It would be nice to see good bands do better though. I’m sure things will evolve for the best soon.

Yeah, I remember writing the narration for the intro of the album. It’s supposed to be a warning from him self sent back to him from the future. So I thought if I would write something like: " This is a message from the future" then might as well dress the band with silver suites Flash Gordon style : -))). So I thought that ‘LISTEN TO ME……LISTEN TO ME….’ was ominous and was cheese free. At the time our bassist and lyric writer Jon Collins didn’t know that I decided to complete the narration due to the fact that I had run out of time and he gave it a go too. This is part of his actual e-mail:

"In terms of words, I think it should start with either 'Listen to me...' or
'Listen to these words...', but repeated with the second time being even
more forceful, so as to emphasise the importance of the message (i.e.
'listen to me....LISTEN TO ME.....' or something like that)." I couldn’t believe we came up with the same thing at the same time. It’s weird how it works out sometimes with ideas.
