Interview Amorphis

Can you speak to us about your eighth album called " Silent waters " ?

It’s the 8th album of Amorphis and will be released in the end of August. It’s was recorded in January 2007 after we finished the shows we had booked for the last album Eclipse. We got in a good phase with the band and wanted to continue without breaks so we entered the studio as soon as there was a break coming up. The album pretty much continues the path set by Eclipse with a little bit more diversity.

How long have you been recording the album ?

We recorded for about 3 weeks.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

Someone brings an idea of a song that we start to work on, then when we enter the studio we work on it some more. We try to let to song live until it’s recorded that we some freshness remains to it when it’s done.

The lyrics are once again based on an episode from Finland's national epic, the Kalevala, can you tell us more ? And is it a concept album ?

It’s a rebellious story about a mothers and sons journey to the Tuonela river in a nutshell.
It’s based on poems by Pekka Kainulinen whos interpretation of Kalevala was a source for the lyrics on Silent Waters.

Did Tomi involve in the song writing process of the new album ?

Both Tomis were involved with song writing this time.

What are your favourite songs out of this new album ? And what makes them so special for you ?

So far maybe Weaving the Incantation and I of Crimson Blood. They were both one of the first song we started to play for the album and represents a bit more progressive side of the album. I think they are both great songs and much fun to play.

Who created the artwork ?

Travis Smith did, like he did on Eclipse. He is the kind of guy who doesn’t run out of ideas.

Did you shoot any video clips for the album ?

Yes we did, of the song Silent Waters. It was shot in the TV studios in Helsinki and features some advanced stuff but I haven’t seen it ready yet.

Which songs from the album will you playing live ? Why did you choose that ones ?

Impossible to say yet, the album is out in 2 months and that’s when the first shows are too. I’m sure we’ll try out different songs and then see which ones stick to the set.

Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

After Lordi won the Eurovision song contest on every airport they though that if you are a band from Finland you must be Lordi. So last year us and a bunch of other bands had a great time explaining that we are not Lordi or pretending that we are…

What are your favourite bands and all times albums ?

  •    Metallica: Master Of Puppets

  •    Deep Purple: Machine Head

  •    Slayer: Reign In Blood

How do you prepare yourselves either mentally or physically before you enter on stage ?

We all have our little things we like to do to get us in the mood. We don’t pray or anything but maybe some stretching and warming up.

Are there any plans for an upcoming tour ?

Yes and we are booking more shows all the time, check out the details at www.amorphis.net

What are your projects for the future ?

After the summer festivals the album comes out and we continue touring that’s the only plan for now, let’s see where that leads us.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show " Metal Choc " ?

If you want shit music listen to something else.
