Interview Alchemist

Can you tell us more about your new album called « Tripsis » ?

It’s our sixth album and the heaviest and fastest and most integrated condenced psychedelia that we have ever produced.

Can you speak to us about the recording sessions ?

We wrote the album over 3 years and then we recorded it ourself in my home studio for 1 year and mixed it in 11 days at backbeach studios in Rye Victoris with DW norton helping produce and mix it.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

We usually start with a riff or a beat and then we Jam as a band until the idea has become a song , The riffs can start from any of us at any time.

What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?

The lyrics deal with the human condition and are about things that most people have to go through in their lives, it can be about Depresion, ambition , addiction , disapointment , succecess , dealing with everyday life , We took inspiration about the way that we were feeling.

What are the biggest differences between this new album and the previous ?

Austral Alien was a very prog album and most probably the melloest we have ever been, but Tripsis is very aggressive and short and smack you in the head sort of album.

What’s your favourite track on « Tripsis » and why ?

Tongues A knives, it’s awesome !! IT’S HARD HITTING WITH CATCHY RIFFS AND COOL LAYERING, IT’S FAST AND MELODIC AND MELLOW AND EXTREME.

Which songs from the album will you playing live ?

Wrapped In Guilt, Substance for Shadow, Tongues And Knives, Grasp The Air, Nothing In Notime, Anticipation Of A High, 6 songs in all.

What are your favourite bands and all times albums ?

That changes every day but, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Slayer, Dead Can Dance, Soft Machine, King Crimson, at the moment im listening to Pig Destroyer, High On Fire and Merciful Fate and Rush.

What's your opinion about the international metal scene ?

Unoriginal mostly, boring, contrived and image driven, most bands are clones of others but not Alchemist.

How do you prepare yourselves either mentally or physically before you enter on stage?

Drink water stretch my fingers and clear my throat, think positive thoughts.

Are there any plans for some gigs or an upcoming tour ?

We will resume playing australian shows in febuary, and we will be back in Europe for Graspop Festival in June 2008.

Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

The funniest is that we are still together after 20 years and no commercial success, Ha Ha.

What are your projects for the future ?

To just tour at the moment and to keep putting out good original heavy music.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show called Metal Choc ?

Hi people Adam from Alchemist says listen to Metal Choc or get eaten by an aussie Croc !!
